Joint Indigenous Faculty Cluster Hire Posting – Faculty of Education

Full Time Tenure-Track Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, & Professor (Open Rank)

Located in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, and on original Treaty One land, in the heart of the Red River Métis homeland, The University of Winnipeg offers high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs in Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Kinesiology and Applied Health, and Science. The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the cluster hiring of 9 Indigenous open-rank, tenure-track academic appointments representing various disciplines and career stages who will contribute to Indigenous excellence across the University of Winnipeg Faculties and to the University of Winnipeg’s commitment to fostering a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion through increasing the representation of Indigenous academics.

The Faculty of Education seeks Indigenous candidates whose scholarships advances learning and knowledge through teaching, research, and service in Indigenous Education, Indigenous Pedagogy, Land Pedagogy or Indigenous Languages with any combination of Education, Arts, and/or Science that has a substantial Indigenous focus. Candidates should demonstrate ability to design and teach courses related to their area of expertise, display a commitment to working and researching collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and have an interest in fostering and enhancing connections with Indigenous individuals and organizations. We welcome candidates who have direct land-based experiences, who bring knowledge of land-based pedagogy informed by traditional teaching, and/or who possess expertise in traditional, historical, and/or contemporary Indigenous Education, Indigenous languages, or other specializations that lead to the creation of effective learning environments supporting Indigenous cultures, identities, languages, and student success.  A valid teacher’s certificate, experience teaching in regular or alternative classroom settings, experience teaching Indigenous learners, and/or a familiarity with Manitoba curriculum would be considered assets. Candidates should have an understanding of the specific ethical and protocol considerations regarding research with and about Indigenous peoples, including the First Nations principles of ownership, control, access, and possession and community-based relational obligations. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Faculty, University, and community service. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to working from a social justice framework.

Expertise in more than one area and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome.

While candidates with a PhD are preferred, ABD candidates, candidates with professional degrees, and candidates with lived experience are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to Indigenous focused teaching as well as academic research in a relevant field and service to the University as per our Collective Agreement. This cluster hire search is designated for Indigenous candidates.

Applicants should therefore provide a statement indicating their relationships to and with Indigenous nations, governments, and communities as well as how they self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis).

In the later stages of the selection process, additional steps supporting the verification of Indigenous identity will occur for individuals who are invited to an interview with the selection committee.
