Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
Maximizing Pathways to Forest Sector Adaptation examines how to reduce barriers for adaptation in Canada's forestry sector. This Natural Resources Canada funded project uses a combination of literature reviews, roundtables, and case studies to learn about obstacles to adaptation, and to build an adaptation tool to overcome these obstacles. The project focuses specifically on Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
The Senior Research Assistant will fulfill a valued role in the Environment and Society Co-Laboratory by supporting ongoing research activities related to the Maximizing Pathways project. They will be directly supervised by Dr. Bullock, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Human-Environment Interactions.
Duties:
The successful candidate will assist with research-related activities, including:
- Conduct environmental scans and literature searches.
- Assist with data collection, transcription, and analysis for case study research.
- Assist with preparing reports, manuscripts, presentations, and other knowledge dissemination products.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
The successful candidate is also expected to meet regularly with the research team.
These responsibilities can be completed in a hybrid format, with portions of the work taking place in the Environment and Society Co-Lab, located on Main Campus.
Qualifications:
- An undergraduate or graduate student whose area of study is in Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Geography, or another related field.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.5.
- Experience with the Microsoft suite of programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required.
- Experience conducting literature reviews is an asset.
- Experience conducting interviews is an asset.
- Experience with NVivo is an asset.
- Able to work at a computer for several hours at a time.
- The position may provide opportunity for field work, which would require the ability to drive out to tree harvesting sites and walk on uneven terrain. However, this is not a requirement to complete the representative duties.
- The successful candidate must have a general understanding of and interest in environmental resource management issues, and must be a self-driven, hardworking and creative individual with strong communication skills and a commitment to quality.
