The Centre for Academic Technology (CAT) at The University of Winnipeg provides campus wide leadership, direction, training, services and support for a broad range of technologies used in teaching, learning, research, and administration. CAT seeks a full-time continuing Electronic Technologist – Electronic and Audio Visual to provide technical support for a broad range of sophisticated and complex audio and visual equipment used campus wide, focused on classroom teaching and learning systems as well as systems used in administration and research.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical support for all audio and visual systems, and presentation and collaborative technologies installed throughout the campus for teaching, learning, administrative and research purposes.
  • Responsible for planning, installation, configuration, support, preventative maintenance, repair and software updates for a broad range of equipment including audio systems, video systems, projection and presentation systems.
  • Instructs faculty and staff on the safe and efficient use and operation of systems and equipment.
  • Installation and setup of complete audio, video and room control systems, designing and fabricating custom pieces as required.
  • Consults with other team members and meets with faculty and staff to determine and analyse requirements, installs systems, adjusts system or PC configuration or programming and network connectivity, tests to ensure systems are operational and meet user requirements.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on audio-visual equipment and electronics, evaluates equipment condition and determines if replacement is needed.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems, checking connections and system cables, replacing or repairing.
  • Some electronic troubleshooting, repair, and soldering.
  • Evaluate new and emerging technologies to determine their suitability for use in the University environment.
  • Makes recommendations for equipment and system purchases.
  • Serves as a technical knowledge resource for faculty and staff with the audio-visual areas.
  • Analyses user or institutional requirements and recommends solutions.
  • Plans and schedules own work and manages own small sized projects.
  • Handles complex tasks within technical domain on small sized projects, is involved in, planning, scheduling and coordinating activities during projects with other stakeholders.
  • Maintain parts inventory, technical documentation, files and records.
  • Responsible for requesting and maintaining spare parts inventory for the equipment within relevant technical areas.
  • Maintains technical documentation and files.
  • Maintains current level of technical knowledge in the areas of audio-visual hardware and software, and electronics through self-study and reading, and through training and course work where available.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year Diploma program in Electronic Technology, Audio Visual Technology, or related program from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Three years directly related experience.
  • Good working knowledge of AV control system installation and troubleshooting, of PC hardware, software and operating systems and of IP based networking systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the setup and operation of complex, specialized equipment in the digital AV technology environment.
  • Familiarity with general programming logic.
  • Knowledge and understanding of electronic theory and application.
  • Ability to analyze and assess user needs, evaluate effectiveness of solutions, and resolve problems.
  • Must be able to apply a systemic, disciplined and analytical approach to planning, designing, testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • Ability to properly and safely use powered and non-powered hand tools.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate schedules and deadlines for own work while maintaining effective working relationships with others in a collaborative team environment.
  • May coordinate project activities of project team members.
  • Ability to adapt and adjust to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Must have the ability to clearly and effectively communicate technical problems, processes, and solutions, both orally and in writing.
  • Capable of creating clear and concise technical documents.
  • Superior customer service skills and abilities are required.

The salary range for this position will be from $56,256.20 to $77,877.80 annually.
