The Development Officer is a full-time continuing position that plays a key role in implementing the University of Winnipeg’s major gift fundraising initiatives. The successful candidate will lead the implementation of the philanthropic engagement activities. Philanthropic activities include identifying potential corporate, foundation, individual, and alumni sources for philanthropic support; cultivating and maintaining relationships with potential donors;; and evaluating and optimizing fundraising efforts to maximize philanthropic contributions.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of the institution’s donors (individuals, corporations and foundations) for gifts through in person visits, phone calls, emails and event attendance.
  • Assesses each donor or prospect’s relationship with the University of Winnipeg and designs tailored engagement strategies to deepen their connection and inspire philanthropic support.
  • Ensures personal portfolio of donor and donor prospects is balanced between prospects in identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Works directly with the Executive Director to ensure they have a robust list of donors curated from the raisers edge database.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of university fundraising priorities in promoting them as projects for donors to support.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the university’s institutional priorities and funding needs and actively promotes these as giving opportunities.
  • Looks for creative ways to steward donors and communicate impact and gratitude for past giving.
  • Takes initiative in identifying innovative and meaningful stewardship opportunities, including donor impact experiences that involve students, faculty, or senior leaders.
  • Participates in monthly "moves management" meetings with the advancement team where they bring forward strategic updates on donors and ensuring coordinated efforts toward solicitation.
  • Works closely with members of the Advancement team and the University of Winnipeg Foundation to implement targeted cultivation and stewardship activities, leveraging events, direct contact, and personalized engagement strategies.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to deepen donor relationships and works with urgency and accountability to advance each donor's philanthropic experience with the University of Winnipeg.
  • Works with the Advancement team to develop cases for support and fundraising plans.
  • Leads the preparation and development of proposals and related materials that communicate the University of Winnipeg’s mission, priorities, and approved fundraising priorities and projects.
  • Collaborates with academic leads, program staff, and administrative units to develop fundraising strategies, plans and funding proposals.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders across the university to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and maximize the impact of special projects.
  • Provides strategic advice and leadership in proposal development, helping internal stakeholders refine goals and articulate impact.
  • Provides strategic advice to senior leaders on the development and implementation of donor engagement strategies, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and donor expectations.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree preferred.
  • Advancement and development courses working towards the CFRE designation is an asset.
  • Minimum 3-5 years in a similar role, experience in post-secondary setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in database management and research/analysis techniques is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills to deal effectively with senior level positions in the University and with CEOs and upper management of corporations are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize daily work activities is required.
  • Strong public speaking skills are required.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer applications are needed.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of internal and external contacts.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered. 

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $80,510 to $101,986 annually.

Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.
