Position Title: Bindery Small Equipment Machine Operator

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent;
  • Experience as a machine operator specifically relating to book binding;
  • Able to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing;
  • Mechanical inclination;
  • Above average mathematical aptitude;

Position Summary:

The Small Equipment Operator performs production support job tasks and is responsible to operate a number of small machines involved with the production and binding of customer product. He/she is responsible to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the equipment to produce a high-quality product  to the prescribed quantity. Other responsibilities include making equipment adjustments as needed, troubleshooting basic machine performance and calling for additional maintenance resources as required.

Although the Small Equipment Operator may primarily operate one piece of equipment, he/she is expected to cross train and operate a minimum of two additional pieces of small equipment. Included in the definition of small equipment are:

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work and communicate effectively with the Manager, Shift Managers and co-workers;
  • Handle production assignments as directed by the Shift Manager with attention to quality and productivity:
  • Understand the job requirements from information on the docket and related information and as communicated by the Shift Manager;
  • Identify job components;
  • Set up machine to be used to requirements for the job;
  • Run samples checking for necessary adjustments;
  • Run job handling components appropriately.
  • Assist in performing maintenance as directed by Shift Manager or another small equipment operator;
  • Perform Production Support duties as assigned including but not limited to:
  • Assisting at the Encaser Operator:
      • Feeding book-blocks into the machine and ensuring book blocks enter the machine in correct orientation;
      • Checker: removing individual books from the conveyor, giving them a general inspection checking for imperfections and assisting with the removal of books from the conveyor if the machine runs into difficulty;
      • Stacker: Removing finished cartons from conveyor, arranging cartons on a skid and applying address labels to individual cartons.
  • Assisting at the Perfect Binder, Multiplex and Saddle Stitch Operators:
      • Ensure page numbers of signatures match and fill pockets with signatures as required;
      • Stacking book-blocks neatly onto skids or into boxes as required.
  • Assisting the Shrink Wrapper Operator:
      • Feeding product into Shrink Wrapper;
      • Stacking product, checking carefully for proper shrinking of plastic material, tears or brakes in wrap;
      • Placing, labeling and stacking cartons on skids.
  • Working in Specialty including:
    • -       Cerluxing;              -     Wiro binding;               -     Spiral binding;

-     Tipping pages;       -     Hand collating;            -     Other handwork as assigned.

  • Move book components as needed with floor jacks and other devices (i.e., electronic jacks).
  • Practice Friesens safety procedures at all times;
  • Assist with Bindery Department maintenance and housekeeping;
  • Practice Friesens safety procedures for equipment and plant situations.
