Position Title: Bindery Machine Operator

NOC: 94152

Bindery Machine Operators are responsible for the setup of stand-alone bindery machines including but not limited to, Folder, Cutter, Casemaker, Cover Decorating, Sewing and Laminator machines as recorded in the electronic job docket instructions. They are responsible to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Bindery equipment to produce a high-quality product to the prescribed quantity. Bindery Operators are also responsible to troubleshoot basic machine performance, making machine adjustments as needed and calling for additional maintenance resources as required.

Folder Operator:The Folding Machine converts printed press sheets/end sheet stock into folded signatures/folded end sheets.

Cutter Operator:The Cutter Operator trims a variety of materials to predetermined sizes following individual job instructions recorded on an electronic docket.

Casemaker Operator:The Case Maker Operator is responsible for the operation of a case making machine producing hard cover cases for books.

Cover Decorating Operator:The Cover Decorating Operator operates embossing machines for the purpose of decorating book cases or covers as required. This includes applying foil stamping, debossing and embossing, and combinations of foil and emboss.

Laminator Operator:The Laminating machine applies plastic coating to job components including covers and dust jackets.

Universe-Hunkeler Operator:The Universe Operator is responsible for the operation of a machine that takes flat, digitally printed sheets and folds, collates and sews these sheets. This process results in a sewn book block which is ready to go to the encasing step. As the Hunkeler Operator, he/she is responsible to unwind the roll of printed paper that is produced by the HP Press.

Uniplex Operator:The Uniplex Operator is responsible for the operation of the sewing machines producing sewn book blocks from collated signatures on the Uniplex System.

Digital Finishing Operator:The Digital Finishing Operator is responsible to produce sewn book block from a roll of paper printed digitally on the HP Press. The operator is responsible to unwind the roll, fold, collate and sew the paper in one pass for making a completed sewn book block.

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a book binding machine operator is a requirement
  • Effective English use and comprehension
  • Basic Machine troubleshooting and maintenance experience
  • Digital Literacy (Microsoft Office, keyboarding skills)
  • Essential Math Skills (Metric and Imperial measurements, problem solving, conversion charts, etc)
  • Effective use of production documents to accomplish job tasks
  • Ability to detect, isolate and identify irregularities and malfunctions in machinery, equipment and product
  • Organization, prioritizing, time and stress management skills
  • Able to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Ability to operator and use small tools
  • Continuous learning/improvement mindset
  • Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment while demonstrating self-management capabilities
  • Excellent manual dexterity
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts
  • Must be willing to work at all Friesens facilities as needed
  • Knowledge of workplace safety, safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Forklift training and operation may be required

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work and communicate effectively with the managers and co-workers;
  • Carry out jobs according to the schedule or as directed by the managers;
  • Manage the setup and operation of stand-alone bindery machines including, but not limited to, Folders, Cutters, Casemakers, Cover Decorating, Laminator, Universe-Hunkeler and Uniplex machines for quality, efficiency, and productivity: understand the job requirements from information on the docket and other sources, request and arrange the components of the job in advance, locate the required components of the job and move them, set up/program the machine as required, flip skids on skid turner as necessary, run sample product making necessary adjustments, run job to the quantities required, perform periodic visual and measurement checks, stack folded product neatly on skids, identify finished lift with accurate counts, arrange for storage of the product, return docket.
  • Perform machine maintenance as described in the Maintenance Binder and the Operators Manual;
  • Practice Friesens safety procedure for equipment and plant situations;
  • Perform any other job assignments as assigned by the managers.
