Corporate Actuary


The Underwriting Analyst assists the Underwriting department with annual studies and reporting.  They will also act as liaison between Underwriting and other departments to support and facilitate underwriting and actuarial processes.


  • Assists the Corporate Actuary in the collection, organization and preliminary analysis of information used in annual pricing studies (Group and Individual).

  • Assists the Corporate Actuary in the collection and organization of life & disability information.

  • Prepares a variety of scheduled reports for existing clients.

  • Prepares monthly renewal reports for the Leadership team.

  • Coordinates the exchange of information between the various Blue Cross regional partners.

  • Proactively recognizes issues or concerns with the data accuracy or integrity and takes action to correct and/or bring to the attention of teams and Leadership.

  • Assists the Underwriting department with system issues.

  • Provides support to the entire Underwriting team and participates in improvement initiatives.

  • Drafts reports and correspondence for the Leadership team.

  • Serves as a member of the Group Implementation Committee.

  • Acts as a liaison for Underwriting with other departments, as required.

  • Assists with special projects, as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Corporate Actuary or the Assistant Manager of Group Underwriting.


  • Dedicated to the principles of exceptional service; committed to responding to, anticipating and addressing customer needs, for both internal and external customers.

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field such as Business Commerce, Economics or Mathematics with a minimum of 5-years’ experience in the insurance industry or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong analytical, mathematical and quantitative skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Good working knowledge of Employee Benefit Plan design and pricing.

  • Strong software application skills including but not limited to Excel, Word, Access and data warehouse query tools. Must have a strong ability to create reports, spreadsheets and logical graphical representation of data.

  • Demonstrates a proactive analysis of problems and the ability to provide and drive solutions.

  • Self-motivated individual; able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize several activities on an ongoing basis.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Able to complete unstructured, non-routine assignments and develop creative solutions to problems.

  • Ability to complete work professionally, with attention to accuracy, thoroughness, technical knowledge, timeliness and with the skills necessary to efficiently and effectively complete assigned tasks.

  • Good working knowledge of underwriting will be an asset.
