Salary Range:
The Salary Range is $69,880 to $94,544, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

CLSI is seeking a Research Data Scientist to join our multidisciplinary team supporting cutting-edge scientific research at Canada’s national synchrotron facility. Working at the intersection of science, data, and advanced computing, our team enables researchers and users to maximize the impact of their experiments through innovative data analysis and machine learning solutions. In close collaboration with beamline scientists, technical teams, and a diverse user community, we develop and apply robust, scalable data workflows that enhance experimental insight, efficiency, and reproducibility.

The Research Data Scientist plays a key role in developing, implementing, and maintaining data analysis and machine learning tools that support experimental data analysis, real-time feedback, and automated workflows. This role contributes directly to advancing scientific outcomes by delivering high-quality analytical solutions, optimizing data processing pipelines, and enabling effective use of complex datasets across a wide range of beamline techniques.

Representative Duties:

  • Collaborate with beamline scientists to develop and implement data analysis and machine learning algorithms for diffraction, spectroscopy, imaging, and other beamline techniques.
  • Provide the CLSI user community with robust and curated data-analysis workflows to maximize scientific output.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets from synchrotron beamlines using Python or other relevant programming languages.
  • Develop and maintain data processing pipelines for integration, reduction, and quality assurance.
  • Work closely with beamline teams to optimize data acquisition, processing protocols, and data quality.
  • Develop and maintain or adopt data visualization tools to effectively communicate analytical results.
  • Stay current with emerging data analysis and machine learning techniques and apply them to improve research outcomes.

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline with a focus on scientific data analysis and machine learning is not required but would be an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience developing and implementing data analysis and machine learning algorithms using Python or other relevant languages;
  • OR a minimum of 2 years of directly related experience with a Master’s degree;
  • OR a minimum of 1 year of related experience with a recently completed Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large, complex scientific datasets is considered an asset.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong programming skills in Python or comparable languages
  • Experience with data analysis, machine learning, and scientific computing
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Curiosity, good communication skills and being a team player is required, in order to work with engineers and scientists with different techniques and beamlines.

Remuneration: The Salary Range is $69,880 to $94,544, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
