The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is the national synchrotron research facility on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon. This facility produces high-intensity synchrotron light, millions of times brighter than sunlight, to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions. The CLS facilitates scientific research aimed at finding solutions for global challenges in agriculture, health, advanced materials, and the environment.
In support of Canadian-based researchers, CLSI and Argonne National Laboratory have entered into a partnership to operate the Spectroscopy group (SPC) of the X-ray Science Division (XSD) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in Argonne, Illinois, U.S.A. The SPC group operates and maintains several insertion device (ID) and bending magnet (BM) beamlines at sectors 9, 20 and 25.
CLSI is currently recruiting an Associate Scientist (equivalent to an Assistant Physicist position at the APS) to work as a member of the Spectroscopy (SPC) group to support Canadian researchers. The incumbent will be based at the APS, with an employment contract facilitated through a Research Service Agreement between the Illinois Institute of Technology and CLSI.
Reporting to the CLS@APS Staff Scientist, the Associate Scientist will be a positive representative of the CLS, supporting the general user program at sector 20 and 25. This includes providing Canadian users with proper training, preparing the beamline for different experiments, and assisting the users during their measurements and data interpretation for publication. As a member of the SPC group, the Associate Scientist will be expected to perform general beamline maintenance and scheduled beamline performance tests, participate in upgrade activities as well as prepare documentation and protocols for sector 20 and 25 operations. The incumbent must have a strong interest in conducting independent or collaborative research, utilizing sector 20 and 25 beamlines. The position requires flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends. Travel to the CLS may be required on occasion.
Requirements: Applicants should possess considerable experience in the application of X-ray absorption and/or emission spectroscopy to problems in life/biological sciences or environmental sciences. A good knowledge of general x-ray synchrotron experimental practices currently employed at X-ray synchrotron radiation facilities. Experience in X-ray spectroscopy and related data collection, analysis and modeling will be considered an advantage. Experience in synchrotron microscopy and spectroscopy will be considered an asset. Scientific programming particularly within the blue-sky project will be considered a strength. Skills in working with diverse research groups, potentially outside the position’s primary field of expertise, to understand abstract concepts and aid in interpreting results within experimental and theoretical frameworks is an asset. The successful candidate has earned a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline and should have a strong research background with a continuing interest in personal research. This position requires an individual who is willing to relocate to Argonne, Illinois.
Remuneration: Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000 USD per annum.
