The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is now accepting applications for an Associate Scientist to join our Industry Services team. As an Associate Scientist, you’ll be at the heart of discovery - assisting with development of cutting-edge technologies while helping scientists and industry partners turn bold ideas into real-world breakthroughs. You’ll work hands-on with advanced equipment, troubleshoot complex technical challenges, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of world-class scientific facilities. From leading exciting beamline projects and collaborating on experiments to showcasing science through tours and presentations, this role is perfect for someone who loves problem-solving, teamwork, and making science happen.

The Industry Services Group at the Canadian Light Source partners directly with industry to deliver proprietary, fee-for-service access to advanced synchrotron capabilities. The team provides end-to-end scientific and operational support - from project planning and sample logistics through data collection, analysis, and reporting - transforming complex scientific challenges into actionable insights. Serving sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, mining, energy, and advanced materials, Industry Services leverages state-of-the-art synchrotron techniques to advance industrial research, innovation, and competitiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Industry Services Group with industrial projects, including data collection, data reduction, and laboratory work across multiple beamlines.
  • Lead small industrial projects from initiation through completion, including coordination of technical tasks and deliverables.
  • Apply specialized knowledge in specific industrial sectors and/or scientific techniques to support client projects. This will include (but not necessarily be limited to) X-ray imaging and diffraction.
  • Interpret experimental data and contribute to or draft technical project reports, including reviewing Industrial Science reports.
  • Collaborate with senior staff in communicating with industrial clients and supporting client development activities.
  • Coordinate the shipping, receiving, tracking, and archiving of industrial samples, data, and client information.
  • Assist in the development and optimization of sample holders and mounting techniques for X-ray imaging and diffraction analysis.
  • Participate in presenting results to industrial clients and contribute to scientific publications, literature reviews, and peer-reviewed outputs as appropriate.
  • Support outreach and knowledge-sharing activities, including scientific tours, group briefings, and presentations.

Qualifications:

  • A relevant Master’s or Ph.D./P. Eng. degree, preferably in a discipline related to materials science (e.g. chemistry, physics, materials engineering, etc.). An undergraduate degree with an equivalent amount of relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of X-ray Diffraction, Computed Tomography, or related techniques would be an asset.
  • A background in programming (especially python), image processing, and managing large datasets would be an asset.
  • A clear aptitude for service, teamwork, and research, particularly in programs requiring collaboration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Experience working with clients/customers and communicating technical information to a non-technical audience would be an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Hands-on experience working with scientific equipment/instruments.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Salary Range: The Salary Range is $69,880 - $94,544 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health and dental insurance, life insurance, a pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation, is part of a competitive compensation package.
