The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is the national synchrotron research facility on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon. This facility produces high-intensity synchrotron light, millions of times brighter than sunlight, to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions. The CLS facilitates scientific research aimed at finding solutions for global challenges in agriculture, health, advanced materials, and the environment.
CLSI is now accepting applications for an Accelerator Physicist as a member of our Accelerator Operations and Development Department (AOD) in our Machine Division. Reporting to the Accelerator Physics Lead, the Accelerator Physicist is responsible for the study, design, and optimization of the CLS and future CLS2 accelerator storage ring lattice and beam dynamics.
- Linear and non-linear optics optimization for a diffraction limited synchrotron that will be leading edge in the next 10 to 15 years.
- Work collaboratively, in a team environment, with CLS physicists, on experimental and theoretical studies of the existing storage ring and future upgrades. Similarly, foster collaboration with other accelerator laboratories.
- Contribute, at a high level, to the accelerator software tools for CLS accelerator systems.
- Participate in machine development activities in support of other AOD groups, to respond to issues raised by CLS colleagues through the Beam Quality meeting, or to apply new methods for beam characterization or control. Occasional shift work will be required.
- Document methods and results in CLS documentation management system using tools such as LaTeX, Overleaf, and git such that they may be reproduced by others.
- Represent CLS in the scientific community through publications in conference proceedings and peer reviewed journals.
- Minimum of a Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics undergraduate degree with three to five years of relevant experience, or a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics with a minimum of two years’ experience with particle accelerators and beam dynamics, or equivalent experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
The following skills will be considered an asset:
- Theoretical and/or applied knowledge of nonlinear systems, or nonlinear charged particle dynamics.
- Strong aptitude in mathematics, optimization problems, capacity to understand abstract physical theory or classical mechanics, as demonstrated by publications.
- Experience with particle beam control and measurement.
- Experience with particle tracking codes such as ELEGANT, TRACY, COSY INFINITY, OPA, Accelerator Toolbox, MAD.
- Experience with multi-objective numerical optimization or machine learning.
- Ability to program in C, C++, PYTHON, MATLAB.
- Experience with cluster computing.
