The course will run from September 15, 2014 - December 19, 2014. Classes will be held in the Annex Building, 471 Portage Ave, room to be determined. Class times will be 9:00 am – 12:00 am, Mondays through Fridays.

Position Overview:

The Foundations English stream focuses on integrated skills. The morning classes have a strong emphasis on oral communication, vocabulary acquisition, and grammatical development, which are integral skills for linguistic progress.

Students entering this level have very little previous experience with the English language. They can use and recognize common words, greetings and expressions, and may have little or no grammar. They can follow simple instructions but rely on gestures. Their pronunciation may restrict communication. Students at this level also have limited reading ability, restricted to simple text with clear layout. Writing is limited to familiar words and phrases, and is best suited to reporting basic factual information.

As an instructor you will teach students how to ask and respond to questions, how to form basic sentences, and how to communicate in social situations. Students will begin to speak with less hesitation and will learn vocabulary for objects and places. They will learn how to use grammatical structures relating to personal facts and common actions. Students will develop language used to handle a variety of common situations.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • TESL Certificate or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in the following:
    • in multi-level delivery which ranges from true beginner to low intermediate
    • teaching beginner level grammar lessons
    • designing and implementing exercises and activities to practice four skills of English (reading, writing, listening, speaking) at the beginner and high-beginner level
    • introducing and teaching learner strategies
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the following:
    • teaching true beginners, beginners, and low-intermediate students
    • introducing and teaching reading strategies
    • teaching vocabulary acquisition in both receptive and productive vocabulary
  • Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
  • Experience with challenges of teaching language without measurable reading ability
  • Experience teaching basic penmanship lessons and basic composition (at the sentence level) an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in mid-beginner learners
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
